A) My chances for participating in physical activity are limited by a number of different things. I feel my parents limit my chances greatly as the constantly advise me against engaging in physical activity because they don’t view it as being important. In addition, I feel that the clothing required for sports participation is restrictive and further limits my participation as I do not feel comfortable wearing certain clothes whilst taking part in any activity especially amongst members of the opposite sex.
B) My chances are also limited when it comes to competitive engagement. However, there is not really any difference between my chances for participation be it either for fun or competitive. My parents do not view physical activity as being important regardless of it is for fun or competitive. My parents exert the greatest influence on my sports participation therefore because of their views towards participation in physical activity I feel this is the greatest barrier to me engaging in sport and physical activity.

This question is in relation to 2 previous answers and this one where you have mentioned that physical activity is not important. Do they feel that physical activity is not important for everyone?

My family have supported me in physical activities, exercise and sport, my dad in particular, he has always pushed me in sports ever since I was young and if it wasn't for his support I would not be physically active like I am now. My dad still pushes me and supports me in going to the gym on a daily basis however my uncles disapprove and would prefer me not to as they do not think it is important or necessary for me to do so.

Why do your uncles disapprove of your engagement in physical activities, do they have a reason?

My uncles disapprove of my engagement in physical activities because as I said before they do not think it is important or necessary as they do not think I should waste my time with physical activities and should focus on my education however this is not the only reason, they also do not approve because of the clothing worn during physical activities especially due to most activities being mixed.

Participating in physical activity, exercise and sport is important in my opinion. This is because I think that it is vital to keep active in order to stay healthy and prevent illness. It is also a natural stress relief for me and can instantly change my mood which is why I would say that if you do not enjoy exercise, you should try something light for at least 20 minutes a day, brisk walking for example just to clear your mind.

My feelings on participation in open, mix gender surroundings differ depending upon what sport it is I am taking part in. for example, dance, dancing amongst or in front of the opposite gender (males), I would not feel comfortable with as some dancing can come across as provocative and as a Muslim this would be against my religion. Another reason being, the clothing, clothing worn in dance could be inappropriate which would not be respectable to wear in front of the opposite gender. However, in other sports or physical activities such as running and going to the gym I would not have a problem participating in amongst males as I don’t see there being anything wrong with doing so as long as the clothing worn is appropriate.

You say you wouldn't feel comfortable participating in dance due to the clothing, but appropriate clothing worn in gym and running would allow you to participate comfortably in front of men. What is your definition of appropriate clothing and why do you feel it is necessary for you to wear these clothes to participate comfortable in front of males?

Appropriate clothing in my opinion is being covered from head to toe in front of men. I feel that it is necessary to wear these clothes in front of males as some clothing can be revealing and this can mislead the thoughts of males. People come to participate in sport for enjoyment, and health therefor negative/disturbing thoughts which can be derived from revealing clothes can divert the attention of people towards inappropriate behaviours.

I believe that what can increase your engagement in physical activity, sport and exercise is getting support from other society members in places like the gym, For example, seeing people laugh at me when I attempted to lift weights taught me to switch to cardio instead.

Is there anything you could personally do to gain support, and to stop people laughing at you whilst you attempt to lift weights?

There is always the option of informing the staff at the gym, and even speaking to the odd member who is laughing or staring however it is not guaranteed that speaking to the member themselves would be adequate enough for them to change their behaviour. If the staff members could punish any member who verbally attacks any member regardless of their situation, I feel that this would change their behaviour and would make me feel comfortable when trying to lift weights. :) ::)

What limits my chances of participating in physical activities, exercise and sport for fun mainly have to go to Uni every day where I will stay until late as I have a lot of work to do so cannot fit time for exercise, this limits me from being able to go to the gym on a daily basis as I would like to.

My chances are limited in competitive engagement in physical activity; exercise and sport as my parents do not think it is necessary for me take part in competitive activities as they believe that going to the gym is beneficial enough for me so there is no need to do so. They would also not be happy with me in participating in competitive sports amongst males as the clothing worn during may not be the right Islamic dress code.

You say your parents wouldn't be happy with competitive sports due to the Islamic dress code. What is the Islamic dress code? Does this dress code apply to all aspects of life or is just for when in front of males?

The Islamic dress code is being covered from head to toe, this applies in all aspects of life in public and in front of males, however I think that when in the company of female members of the family it is not compulsory to wear a hijab.

If your parents views were different, how would your engagement levels differ?

Also, why do you not feel comfortable about the clothing, especially in front of members of the opposite gender?

My chances are very limited to take part of any physical activity, sports for fun. There are many things going on in my life at the moment, studying academic studies at the same time religious studies, working full-time and so on... I have very limited time for myself.

The same applies for competitive engagement, I would need enough time to train and compete against others generally speaking. Personally I wouldn't take part even if I had the time to, being a muslim i need to be weary of the environment around me and much likely there would be male present and the clothing wouldn't be necessarily appropriate to wear.

Ignoring time for the moment, How and what could be done to the environment which would possibly increase your engagement in competitive sports?
