It is vital to participate in physical activity, exercise and sport from time to time. At least a couple of minutes a day.The least a person could do is go for a walk to relax and clear their mind, this is wha i do the majority of the time since I don't have much time.

My sentiment towards free mixing sports is that it can be very uncomfortable for a Muslim women (with a veil or without) to be participating while men are around. But then again depending on the sport and the way it is played. I personally wouldn't want to run/jump etc...in front of men regardless of what type of clothing i'm wearing, and of course appropriate clothing that is modest.

Why do you feel participating in front of males is uncomfortable for a Muslim woman? You do mention that it does depend on the sport and the way it is played, why, and which, sports would make you feel uncomfortable?

Participating in physical activity, exercise and sport is important in my opinion. This is because I think that it is vital to keep active in order to stay healthy and prevent illness. It is also a natural stress relief for me and can instantly change my mood which is why I would say that if you do not enjoy exercise, you should try something light for at least 20 minutes a day, brisk walking for example just to clear your mind.

My feelings on participation in open, mix gender surroundings differ depending upon what sport it is I am taking part in. for example, dance, dancing amongst or in front of the opposite gender (males), I would not feel comfortable with as some dancing can come across as provocative and as a Muslim this would be against my religion. Another reason being, the clothing, clothing worn in dance could be inappropriate which would not be respectable to wear in front of the opposite gender. However, in other sports or physical activities such as running and going to the gym I would not have a problem participating in amongst males as I don’t see there being anything wrong with doing so as long as the clothing worn is appropriate.

You say you wouldn't feel comfortable participating in dance due to the clothing, but appropriate clothing worn in gym and running would allow you to participate comfortably in front of men. What is your definition of appropriate clothing and why do you feel it is necessary for you to wear these clothes to participate comfortable in front of males?

I have previously been a member of a gym but as I have gotten older and busier, I now rely on more organic forms of exercise like walking and playing with my children in the park/garden.

Was gym the only form of exercise you were involved in? also, how does the amount and intensity of the exercise you get now differ from the gym?

As a child growing up I engaged in regular physical activity and was actively involved in a wide range of sports until the age of 14. The vast majority of any physical activity or sports I participated in was done at school during PE lessons and extra-curricular after school clubs. My favoured choice of physical activities consisted of gymnastics and swimming however, upon turning 15 and starting my second to last year at high school I promptly stopped taking part in any form pf physical activity, sport or exercise. At this point it was not compulsory for me to continue to take part in weekly PE sessions at school and I therefore opted to pursue various other interests. My reasons for deciding to stop taking part in any physical activity were dependent on a number of factors. Although, I decided to stop participating in physical activity, my previous experiences when engaging in any form of activity or sport are all positive and I thoroughly enjoyed all activity and sport over the years.

You say a number of factors contributed to your decision to stop taking part, would you be able to share some of these factors and why they have put you in the position to stop?

My family have supported me in physical activities, exercise and sport, my dad in particular, he has always pushed me in sports ever since I was young and if it wasn't for his support I would not be physically active like I am now. My dad still pushes me and supports me in going to the gym on a daily basis however my uncles disapprove and would prefer me not to as they do not think it is important or necessary for me to do so.

My family were always supportive of me when I played sports and exercised when I was younger. As previously mentioned when I was 11 I wasn't able to play football any more but they encouraged me to take part in my PE lessons in school. Now, whilst my family encourage me to stay fit and healthy and are happy with me using the gym they much prefer me to go to an all female gym session rather than mixed because of the clothes that have to be worn whilst exercising.

When I was younger I was very into my supports, mainly football, and used to enjoy taking part in any sort of sport. There were certain sports I couldn't take part in because I had asthma so it was difficult for me to participate in activities such as cross country and even sometimes football as I wouldn't be able to run too long without having to take a break. When I got to about age 11, my parents told me I was no longer allowed to play football as I used to play in a predominantly male football team and it wasn't appropriate. I think the fact my parents restricted me from playing football influenced my thinking towards exercise in general and I just gave up because I wasn't able to play the sports that I wanted to. Now that I'm older exercise and physical activity is something that I want to do because it makes me feel good in myself but I don't have much time to exercise as much as I'd like too and I also lack motivation even though it is something that I want to do.

I think it is ludicrous to think that physical activity and sport is only for males. Sport and exercise physical activity is one of the most important ways a person can remain active and help reduce the risk of many acute and chronic illnesses and diseases. Not only can physical activity be of physical benefit to those taking part in it but I believe it can also be psychologically beneficial. I think it is clear that sport and activity has and continues to be beneficial to people of all ages, genders and background and therefore it would be impossible to agree with such a statement. Furthermore, over the years we have seen many sportswomen became successful not only in Britain but also all over the world and have also become positive female role models for young girls growing up. One only has to look at the impact that athletes like Jessica Ennis has had at the most recent Olympic games in London and the level of success and fame she has achieved shows that females can be just as good and just as successful as males in sport and physical activity.

I feel that I would be more inclined to take part in physical activity if there was an increase in female only gyms or leisure centres where I along with other women would not have to worry about men being around whilst we engaged in physical activity. Furthermore, I believe that increased levels of support from the wider Muslim community other than just women would be a huge factor in influencing women’s participation in physical activity. I think that if Muslim males in particular were more supportive and understanding of women who take part in physical activity then this would help massively. If my parents also supported me and understood that I would like to take part in physical activity and were able to understand that physical activity is important for males and females then this would help to increase my participation in all forms of physical activity and sport. As previously mentioned, I believe that sports and exercise clothing is far too revealing and I do not deem it appropriate for those Muslim women who wish to cover their bodies when taking part in physical activity. I think that if appropriate clothing could be developed that would allow me to cover my body in accordance with my religious views but also be suitable and comfortable for me to wear to a gym or leisure centre then this would be of great benefit and surely would help increase my participation in physical activity. Finally in my opinion, I think that if men were to help out in the so called ‘gendered roles’ and help women cook and clean and help with other domestic jobs around the house then this would increase time available for me to exercise and would in turn without doubt help to increase my participation in physical activity.

I think it is a prehistoric way of looking at things. Women have more than proven their ability to take part in competitive sports and in physical fitness generally. Anyone who believes this kind of nonsense is obviously threatened by women. Women have found their place in the world ....  And that is stood right next to the men.
